GRADES IN THIRD GRADE
If this is your first child in 3rd grade at Green Lake Schools, you may not know that this is the year when students begin to get letter and percentage grades.
As the third grade teacher, it’s my job to transition students to this grading system & to make it as smooth of a transition as possible. I work with students to help them understand the importance of grades by tracking & monitoring grades through our data notebooks. I try to help them begin to understand what the grades on their papers mean. Most importantly, I allow students to correct work to improve their grades. I want this to be a positive experience for everyone!!
As a classroom policy, any students who score less than 70% on a homework assignment should correct that assignment to earn back half of the points they missed. For example, if I scored 60% and redid the assignment correctly, I could earn 20 points back (half of the 40 points I missed.) My grade would then be an 80%. This will occur most often on math assignments. I will also allow this on any tests. This is a great way for you to work with your child to see what he/she is learning in school and also reinforce anything that was taught that your child might have missed or misunderstood.
Parents, you can monitor your child’s progress through Skyward. If you need your username & password information please contact Amy Dornfeld in the office. Grades for the week will get posted each Friday.
Lastly, although it is highly recommended that those with 70% or less make the corrections, anyone is welcome to turn in any corrected work to be re-scored, even if it’s not below 70%. This is new, but we’ll get through it together. Please let me know if you ever have any questions.
