Adult chaperones need to send entry fees for field trip(see details below)
Coming events...
Monday, March 16 - Dog and Cat Party at 6:30 at the Caestecker Library - invite lots of people
Please think of a snack you can share for this party
Thursday, April 2 - Blanket tying celebration - all afternoon (12:30 til we're finished)
Thursday, April 16 - Field Trip - please indicate if you will be joining us because we need to notify the venues of numbers.
Reading News: We will be meeting Walrus Walt, making word lists that have Ww words in them, and concentrating on word order in the sentences we write to make sure they make sense. We have been practicing making CVC words (consonant/vowel/consonant) to perfect our abilities to hear the beginning, middle, and end sounds of words. We will write using St. Patrick's words.
Star Words: Sight words so far: the, of, and, a, to, in, is, you, that, it, he, was, for, on, are, as, with, his, they, I, at, be, this, have, from, or, one, had, by, words, but, not, what, all, were, we, when, your, said, can, there, use, an, which, each, she, so, how, their, will, up, other, about, out, many, then, them, these, so, some, her, would, make, like, him, into, time, has, look, two, more, go write, see, number, no, way, could, people my, than, first, water, been, called, who, am, its, now, find, long, down, day, did, get, come, made, may, part, big, got, here, let, me play, run, small, give, good, love, today, grow, little, dad, mom over, new, sound, take,
Next week's words: only, work, know, place
Math News…
We will practice counting on from a number other than one this week as we play a dice and graph game in which we get to the sum by counting on from the first number to find the total - which is a good strategy for addition success. We will also go back to remind ourselves how to create sets for numbers to 20, as well as writing the number for a set with 0-20 items in it.
Daily Learning Standards...
For next week the learning standards are:
I can write a telling sentence with a capital letter first and a period at the end .
I can count by 1s, 2s, and 10s.
I can say the sounds in words.
Dog and Cat Party - your children are getting ready to impress you with their speaking and dancing skills as we prepare for this benefit fundraiser. They have created posters that some children will be speaking about, and an alphabet book about taking care of pets that will be shared. We have also collectively choreographed two dances that will be performed for your enjoyment. Thank you for putting up posters to help us publicize this event.
I will purchase drinks and cups for the occasion, and if you could help out by bringing a snack to share for the party that would be very helpful. We are so excited to share what we know about taking care of pets, and also about raising some donations to help out the shelter.
Our class will all be wearing matching attire for the Dog and Cat Party - since a Thrivent grant made purchasing supplies possible, we will be able to wear the shirts they provided for us so we will be a matching team. Any kind of comfortable bottom attire is fine - the shirts are grey.
Blanket Tying Bonanza.... While I was visiting my daughter in Minneapolis last week-end we came upon a magnificent sale at JoAnn Fabrics and found beautiful fleece for 70% off (my kind of shopping!!) So we now have enough fabric to create 18 blankets to share. We will give them to the police department, social services, and local hospitals to provide comfort for any small friends who need some warm love to share. Therefore... if we can have lots of people come to help us with the tying process on April 2 we will be ever so grateful. Please consider helping us, or spread the word to any other adults you know who might be willing to help so we can have a great time sharing our love. Background checks do not need to occur for this activity.
And... the big reveal for the Field Trip on April 16.....
Your children will be in charge of the organization for the trip, but our destination will be to visit the Appleton Children's Museum (The Building for Kids) for the morning, where our agenda will be to play and then play some more. We will be able to eat our packed lunched there, and then we will go to the planetarium at the UW facility in Neenah to see "Our Place in Space" before heading home again. We will be gone from 8:00ish until 3:00 -
thanks to all of you who have taken care of the paperwork for background checks so we will have lots of wonderful chaperones to come along with us. We need to give some number information, so if you could let me know your intentions to come along that will be very helpful.
I have money budgeted for the student entry fees to the two venues, but adults will need to pay their own entry. The combined adult fee will be $10.00 for both attractions. We have to have the payment sent to each place in advance of our trip - so if we could get that collected in the next week and a half that would be wonderful! If you send cash, please just put it in an envelope and put it in your child's folder this coming Monday the 9th. If you would rather write a check please make it out to GreenLakeSchool and we will transfer it into our account. The planetarium specifically states that if an adult is not included in the group entry fee, they will not be allowed to enter to see the show (which makes sense for safety reasons). Therefore, we really need to get these fees taken care of very soon.
For planning purposes could you please fill this form out and return it in your child's folder on Monday.....
Thanks for responding - it helps with our planning. :)

Reading News: The short sound of Oo will be the sound we focus on this week. We will enjoy illustrating the poem I found a 4 Leaf Clover for our poem notebooks. The word family we will study are the “it” words.
Star Words: Sight words so far: the, of, and, a, to, in, is, you, that, it, he, was, for, on, are, as, with, his, they, I, at, be, this, have, from, or, one, had, by, words, but, not, what, all, were, we, when, your, said, can, there, use, an, which, each, she, so, how, their, will, up, other, about, out, many, then, them, these, so, some, her, would, make, like, him, into, time, has, look, two, more, go write, see, number, no, way, could, people my, than, first, water, been, called, who, am, its, now, find, long, down, day, did, get, come, made, may, part, big, got, here, let, me play, run, small, give, good, love, today, grow, little, dad, mom,
Next week's words: over, new, sound, take
Writing development...
We wrote factual things about some photos this week -writing observed facts about pictures of dogs and cats. The focus is to create true and logical sentences beginning with a capital letter, showing spacing between words, and including punctuation at the end. If a sight word is used in writing, it should be spelled correctly as we have those to look at, and other written words should show attention to the sounds heard as the word is spoken slowly. This coming week we will be working on writing collaborative pattern books - as a class and then trying it as a small group, too.
Math News…
We worked on decomposing numbers this week - taking a group and splitting it into two distinct parts. We continue to practice developing addition concepts with pictures and stories, following those up with writing equations to get used to what those look like. Any time numbers are written now they are expected to be written in the correct direction - if not they are asked to be corrected.
Daily Learning Standards...
For next week the learning standards are:
I can count by 10s to 100.
I can tell you about the characters in a story and where it takes place...
I can use . and ? in writing.
Cats and Dogs...
Thank you for your help in promoting our Cat and Dog Party on March 16 - we are working on learning the talking points of things that all animals need and deserve so we can share that information at the party. We also created an alphabet book about taking care of pets that we hope to share as well. The paintings turned out wonderfully - many thanks to Mrs. Dobrinska for coming to be our muse that day.

How to turn an old sock into a lovable toy..
During our Love Party on Thursday the 13th we will be using an old sock as the base for creating a lovable stuffed dog. If you have an old sock that you don’t wear anymore, but that doesn’t have holes in it, and haven't sent one yet please it send this week. It will return to after the party in a much cuter condition. Any size and/or color is fine. I have socks for several kids already and we also have lots of extras to use, so if you want to send your own it's fine, but if you don't mind the color we have lots to share.
Many thanks to Tiffany Kinas who is cutting all the felt dog parts for our Love Puppies.
We still could use a couple of bags of fiberfill stuffing if anyone would like to donate to our cause.
Love Party Excitement!
The invitations will be mailed, and the excitement is running high for our amazing Love Party. We are looking forward to having our guests come to spend the afternoon with us. Our browsing boxes are stuffed with good books to read to you – whoever your child’s guest is will be really proud of how well each child is reading. Thank you for sending the names and address of the guest for your child. We hope everyone will have a wonderful time at the party.
I have guest information for: Jayden, Gracie, Keely, Gus, Abbott, Maeve, Sloane, Lucy, Liam, Amara, Cameron, Mariah, Zander, Hunter, and Josie. Others please send the name and address on Monday so we can send the invitations.
What Clothes Should I Wear? We are putting together our amazing books about the seasons and weather. Lexi, our high school student helper, is working with us each afternoon to get these all put together. They look so nice when they are all collated!
Exciting things are coming !!!
Looking ahead -- there are three wonderful opportunities coming for adults to help us out with special events in our class. I will provide specific details soon, but put these dates on your calendar to keep them free for us...

When your child checks out a book at the library Tuesday, keep track of the date to return it and check out bunches more for the summer!
Tuesday, May 30 - Return folders
Walk to Caestecker Library to get our library cards and check out books.
Thursday, June 1 – The Little Red Hen presented at 6:30 in the cafeteria. (Actors can come to the K room at 6:15) Plan to take home your child's binders and folders this evening.
It is Show Time!!!!
On Thursday evening, June 1 at 6:30 the Kindergarten Class will be presenting a fabulous musical in the school cafeteria. You will enjoy our production of “The Little Red Hen” – it is absolutely amazing. Show time will be 6:30 on Thursday June 1, and we will be happy to host lots of guests, so invite all your friends and relatives and have them bring their cameras. You could invite some Hollywood agents, too, if you know any. Admission will be a plate of cookies per family, so we can have a reception and afterglow following the show. The entire show is pretty quick, so with reception and autograph signing after I would anticipate being finished by 7:30.
The kids have self cast themselves for this show - when I asked who would like to be what they all volunteered a distinct idea with no overlapping choices, so everyone got their wish. We are making amazing costumes next week for most of the characters, but these cast members might like to dress in a particular way -
Ethan - Narrator - dress like a movie star.
Raygan - red clothes
Laura - pink clothes
Abigail - cat colored clothes
Uriah - frog colored clothes
Shep - dress like a farmer
Scarlett, Kaylynn, Harrison, Delphine, Hunter, Bobby, Quinn, Lydia, Landen, Verlayne - we are making fabulous costumes, but wearing a white or yellow shirt would be wonderful.
Reading News: We will do our favorite work station activities this week for one last hurrah – we will review our guided reading books and return them to the book room for kids to enjoy next year. The testing is now complete for DIBELS. I will include your child's results along with an explanation cover page in the final report card evaluations. Everyone did extremely well.
Sight words.... your children are sight word wizards - I'm so proud of the progress they have made in learning the sight words this year - use your new library cards often to continue reading throughout the summer to keep those skills sharp for first grade!!
Six Flags Great America Fun - As many of you were keeping track of the read aloud time you spend at home for the A&W reading challenge, Ms. Chetto also was entering that reading information into a secondary reading incentive program (double bang for your buck) and these children have earned a ticket to Great America - congratulations!! It's in your folder today, so look for it. Congratulations to Delphine, Hunter, Bobby, Ethan, and Abigail for earning a day of fun at Great America.
Have a wonderful summer!! This year has flown past. It is sad to think I won't be able to spend each day with your child any more. I told them last week that since I'm certified to teach through 8th grade, I think I will just keep them and we will learn together for the next 8 years, and then they can just go on to high school. I will miss them, but also know that they are all ready to be really successful as my neighbors in first grade next year. I am proud of all the accomplishments they have made throughout their kindergarten year. Keep on reading, keep on learning, and come to visit me next year.

Reading News: We have finished both PALS and DIBELS testing for the year - Next week I will send a copy of the scores from the three times each were given to your child throughout the year. All of them have shown impressive progress in their skill and reading development - be proud!! We are enjoying reading old favorite books from our browsing boxes as well as continuing to add new texts to our collection. For the last two weeks of work stations the kids have chosen their top picks of favorites to rerun for centers.

Math News…
This week we will be all about adding and subtracting – solving both kinds of problems, and playing games with the hula hoops to practice math facts. We are trying to get to the point of being fluent in the facts up to 5 – being able to name the answer without having to count it out each time.
Food from the Earth: Our seeds are germinating well, and most of them have peeked over the edge of the cups, now. We have researched foods we eat that come from different parts of the plant. Thanks for you help in providing the Plant Parts for the party on Friday - this is written before it occurs, but I'm sure it was delicious! :)
Lunch with the Kellys: Mr. and Mrs. Kelly have invited our class to come to their house for lunch on Thursday afternoon - they live very close to school so we can walk the block to their house and enjoy lunch in their beautiful garden. The food will be provided for us that day, so you can take a break from packing lunch that day. In case of horrible weather, we will move our lunch date to the following Monday (June 1). A permission slip is attached.
Library on Friday: Friday afternoon we will walk to the Caestecker Library to receive our new library cards, sign them, and then use them to check out a book to take home. If the weather cooperates we will also stop to play at PlaygroundPark on the way home. If your child already has a card, he or she does not need to bring it - we can just look up their account on the computer upon check out.

The new popcorn words this week are “away, back”.
Math News…
We focused on word problems this week - how we can take a question or story and turn it into an equation. The kids did well thinking of their own situations and deciding how that could be shown with counters and also turned into equations. This coming week we will be practicing adding and subtracting - just drilling to keep those skills sharp and stuck in our brains.
Food from the Earth: Our final IB unit for this year will be the study of how we get food from the earth. We have explored bean seeds - put some in sprout houses to watch and also planted some in cups in dirt. This coming week we will be learning about the different parts of plants we eat. Sometimes we eat leaves(lettuce, spinach), sometimes stems (celery, asparagus), sometimes roots (carrots, radishes), sometimes flowers(broccoli, cauliflower), sometimes seeds (peas, corn, sunflower seeds), and sometimes fruit. We will learn about different plant parts that we eat throughout the week, and then celebrate with a plant part party on Friday, May 22. If you would please have your child bring an item from the category listed below, we will combine all the goodness and enjoy healthy eating of several parts of plants. Thanks for helping with this activity. :) If the items could come to us clean and cut we'd really appreciate it.

Organization… Going Places
Our field trip was so well organized(yay for the kid planners)… and so much fun!! We loved talking with Lisa Reas-Knapp about plants, the Lego displays were amazing, and we had the added surprise bonus of a carnival at UW Fox Valley before the planetarium show started. There is a ticket attached to this newsletter for your child to revisit the planetarium for another free visit with a paid adult. We really appreciate these people who gave up their day to chaperone: Linda Gloyd, Erin Carter, Miss Santa, John and Gretchen Feeney, Brittny Gerig, Elizabeth Napier, Tiffany McCauley, Kristin Data, Joe Jonas, Miss King, John Roecker, Danielle Reysen, Mike Rossberg, Melissa Siegel, Katy and Tim Tress, Susan Rumpel, Christy Weise, and Teri Bickerstaff. I had a wonderful time, I hope you all did, too! Of course a movie is in the works. :)
Food from the Earth: Our final IB unit for this year will be the study of how we get food from the earth. We will learn about where plants come from, what living things need to survive, and the different parts of the plant that we can eat and enjoy. This coming week we will be focusing on seeds and how the growth process begins there.

Reading News: We will enjoy meeting Walrus Walt this week who will help us learn the sound for the letter Ww. The ending word family we will study will be “ip”. Our writing focus will be word order in a sentence – learning that we need to write the words in the order we say them so the sentence makes sense. Math News…
This week we will again have a graphing race using two dice to create equations. We will also review our addition and subtraction grouping strategies for writing equations.
Organization… Going Places
Our next unit of study involves learning about the kind of organization it requires to plan a trip. We will first learn about where we are in our world, learn about different types of transportation available and what kind is appropriate for what terrain and distance, and then we will explore the organization involved in taking a trip. This unit will culminate in the class planning and carrying out their own field trip on April 28. Stay tuned for more details!!
This past week we have studied where we are in space - we've learned the planet names and their relation to the sun, we know a few facts about each planet, and we know some way cool songs about the planets. This coming week we will be thinking a little closer to home - looking at a map of Wisconsin and identifying where we are on that, and also learning about the things that are special and unique about our state. We will also move out a little further and look at maps of the United States and identify where we are on that map. Next we will create maps of the world and identify our place there, too. Ultimately each child will take a hypothetical trip that they will map out, plan transportation for, and organize what to take and what to do. You can have some conversations with your children the next couple of weeks to help them decide where to take an imaginary trip.
We also love to have trip taking experts come to talk with us - if you have or are going to take a trip, keep us in mind. We would love to hear how you planned and executed the trip and we love to look at photos. If anyone is willing to tell us about a trip they have taken we will be a rapt audience!

Math News…
We will continue to review the shape names and practice finding the shapes in common items in our classroom and outside. We will practice printing the number 3 this week, and we will continue all of our usual daily jobs that reinforce math skills.
Daily Learning Standards...
For next week the learning standards are:
I can learn new words and what they mean. When you encounter a new word in stories you read at home, point the word out to your child and relate it to something familiar to him or her.
I can describe familiar 2-D shapes. Have your child identify items that are shaped like a circle, square, triangle, etc. Then have your child tell a little bit about that shape.
Each morning your child has a bit of “morning work” to do that will provide practice in these skills and standards. We are dating them and saving them in your child’s folder so you will have a record sent home at the end of each month of their great accomplishments as kindergarten progresses.
The Five Senses… We begin our study of healthy bodies by focusing on the five senses. We will explore the five senses in the next couple of weeks. This week we will focus on an overview of the senses on Tuesday, sight on Wednesday, and smell on Thursday. If your child would like to bring things appropriate for those senses on each day that would be fun - but not necessary - use your judgment. We will continue on with the other senses next week.
Please return folders…
If you prefer to read the newsletter in electronic form, you can find it on the school website by going to the faculty directory, then to my webpage, and then to the heading “Weekly Newsletter”.
